The painting The Floating Feather – approx. 1680
Original: oil paint on canvas 144 x 159 cm, wxh
The original name of this painting is ‘A pelican and other birds near a pool’.
The painting shows a waterbasin with a pelican, cassowary, flamingo, black crowning bird, other waterbirds and a feather floating on the water. The basin is in a beautiful setting of trees and hilly countryside.
On the floating Feather you can see how detailed Melchior d’Hondecoeter made his paintings. He made oil sketches of the animals, which he could then use as an example later on.
Like the painting the Menagerie, this painting was commissioned by King William III and Mary to be made for Palace ‘t Loo.
