The Painting Children of the Sea by Joseph Israëls – 1872
Original: oil paint on canvas 93.5 x 48.5 cm, wxh
This painting shows the poor children of fishermen who lived on the North Sea, in Zandvoort, Katwijk or Scheveningen. They play with a simple homemade boat and the oldest carries the youngest. One suspects a message behind this performance. For example, the boy carrying his sister on his back is said to be a symbol of the hard life of the fishermen at the sea.
Joseph Israëls was first affected by the difficult, poor and simple life of this fishing community in Zandvoort when he was there to recover from a disease in 1855. From 1863 onwards Joseph often painted these kinds of subjects with warm colours and beautiful use of dark and light.
