Fishing boat on the beach at Scheveningen by Jacob Maris
Original: oil on canvas 89,5 x 101,5 cm wxh
The painting shows the heavy, hard and sober life of the herring fishermen. The “bomschuit” is a ship with a flat bottom and a broad hull, so that they could be stranded on the beach by the surf. There were no harbours in those days. The style is from the Hague School and these paintings were very popular with the Dutch, but also in America.
Jacob made a number of paintings like this and in 1885 he even made an almost identical painting to this one, but slightly smaller and lighter.
The painting is part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
