The painting: The Merry Drinker by Frans Hals
Original: Oil on canvas 66.5cm x 81 cm wxh
The Merry Drinker, formally known as “a Militiaman holding a berkenmeier” is a famous painting of the Dutch Master Frans Hals. The exact identity of the person painted never became clear, but his clothing suggests it is a merchant dressed like a member of the civic guard and is dated 1628-1630.
The cheer of this portrayed Merry Drinker is relative. The man offers a glass of wine to the viewer with his lips slightly opened, suggesting he wants to say something. His flushed cheeks and his twinkling eyes suggest he is surprised at being seen.
Frans Hals effectuated a lively and moveable impression by handling his brush quick, loose and spontaneous. The Merry Drinker gives us the impression he is not posing. The physical reality of the merry drinker is exceptionally powerful, especially for a painting of that time.
