The painting Portrait of Andries Stilte as a Standard Bearer – 1641
Original: oil paint on canvas 78.5 x 104 cm, wxh
This painting made by Johannes Cornelisz. Verspronck is a portrait of Andries Stilte as a standard bearer of one of Haarlem’s militia companies. Andries is dressed in a pink costume with lace collar, finished with a satin bow. On his head he wears a large black hat with feathers. The sash and banner are of a beautiful blue color that stand out well against the neutral background.
Andries’ family coat of arms can be seen in the upper left corner. Andries ordered Johannes to paint him in this rich pink costume when he was still a bachelor. If he were a married man, he would have had to wear an elegant black outfit. Andries Stilte was born in Haarlem and died in 1675.
