The painting shows a table set with a damask tablecloth and the remains of a meal consisting of bread and nuts on pewter plates with an engraved knife, a lemon (used to flavour the white wine), a small clock with a key on a blue string, a book, a rummer (= a wine glass with a rounded calyx and thick hollow stem fitted with studs) and a silver Tazza. A Tazza is a shallow dish-shaped drinking vessel on a high base from which wine was usually drunk or which was used to display fruit and/or other delicacies. The fruit on Pieter Claesz’ paintings was often painted by his colleagues, such as Roelof Koets
