Original: oil paint on canvas 116.5 x 135 cm, wxh
The painting shows a menagerie with 2 squirrel monkeys from Central America, 2 white sulphur-crested cockatoos from Australia, a grey parrot from Africa and a purple-naped lory, on a chain, from Indonesia. All situated on a balustrade and marble bench.
A menagerie is the forerunner of the current zoo. Wild and exotic animals were kept in captivity by the wealthy. This painting was commissioned by King William III for his private rooms in ‘t Loo.
