Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck

Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck 1600/1603 – 1662
The life and work of Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck
Johannes was born in Haarlem as the eldest son of portrait painter Cornelis Engelsz Verspronck, originally from Gouda, and Maritge Jansdr Rodenrijsen, between 1600 and 1603.

He lived with his parents for a long time and was taught by his father in portraiture. Frans Hals probably also contributed to his style of painting because there is some influence to be seen in Johannes’s paintings, although he worked much more on the details than Frans Hals. Johannes also worked in the studio of Frans Hals. In 1632 Johannes became a member of the St. Luke’s Guild in Haarlem.

Johannes Verspronck was a Baroque painter and draughtsman in the Golden Age. The rich citizens of Haarlem and surroundings liked to be portrayed by Johannes. There are 100 known portraits of Johannes’ hand. His paintings radiate tranquillity and are not striking, but are painted with a soft brushstroke. Johannes himself was also a quiet, unnoticeable man who lived in the Sint Jansstraat in Haarlem.

Johannes died in Haarlem on the 30th of June in 1662 and has always lived and worked in Haarlem. Only one signed still life of John is known.
