Vincent van Gogh
Vincent Willem van Gogh, 1853-1890
The life of Vincent van Gogh
Vincent Willem van Gogh was born in 1853 in Zundert, a small Dutch village close to Belgium. He was the son of preacher Theodorus van Gogh and Anna Cornelia Carbentus.
Nowadays van Gogh is considered to be one of the most important painters of the 19th century but in his days most likely only one painting was sold. Acknowledgement as a master painter took place a long time after that.
Vincent van Gogh’s passion for art began during his work as an art trader for several years in his younger years. In 1877 he moved to Amsterdam in order to get prepared to study theology. Already in 1878 he stopped this study and moved to Brussels. Over there he studied to become an evangelist, and later to be an artist. In 1881 he moved back to his parental house where he came in contact with the Hague School. Mainly Anton Mauve became his preceptor. Vincent moved on to Antwerp, followed by Paris.

During al these years the mental state of mind of Vincent became worse. He bonded more and more with his brother Theodore, who also helped him out financially more than once.
